Omnipod® 5 FAQs: Glucose Monitoring

At Insulet our mission is to improve the lives of people living with diabetes.  As you may be aware, Omnipod 5 is now available to connect to the Dexcom G7 Sensor, in addition to the Dexcom G6 and Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor. We recently wrote to all Omnipod 5 users across the UK to share this great news. Insulet recognises that, at the current time, the combination of Omnipod® 5 with Dexcom G7 is not accepted as meeting the commercial threshold policy in England and that therefore there is a barrier to it being funded. We are committed to find a solution to this issue and in the meantime, our teams are standing by to help both users and healthcare professionals who are faced with any challenges. The launch of Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G7 is yet another step forward in our Sensor integration programme for the UK and Netherlands to offer an increasing choice to the type 1 diabetes community. While we recognise that not all Sensors are accessible to everyone in all five countries (Scotland, England, N.Ireland, Wales and The Netherlands) immediately, we believe it’s important you know that we’re ready when you are.

Please note that if you are using Omnipod 5 with either the Dexcom G6 or FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensors, and intend to continue doing so, your Controller will still get the software update, but this will have no impact on you or the Omnipod 5 System you are using.

No, the Omnipod 5 System does not operate with an internal blood glucose meter. The Omnipod 5 System integrates with the Dexcom G6, Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensors. The Dexcom receiver cannot be used as part of the Omnipod 5 System. Users must use the Dexcom G6 or G7 mobile app* on a compatible device as part of the system. The Omnipod 5 System is compatible with the Dexcom G6, Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensors.

The Omnipod 5 System can be used with or without a Sensor but to benefit from automated insulin delivery, it must be paired with a compatible Sensor. Please discuss with your healthcare provider at the next planned consultation to determine which product is right for you.

Currently, the Omnipod 5 System only integrates with the Dexcom G6, Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensors.

Currently both Dexcom G6 and Dexcom G7 are available in the UK. 

Omnipod 5 patients considering connecting with a different sensor brand should first discuss with you. Connecting a different compatible CGM sensor brand with Omnipod 5 can be done at a Pod change via the Omnipod 5 App on the dedicated Controller. Step by step instructions will be displayed on the Controller on how to connect Omnipod 5 to a new sensor.
