What is Insulin Pump Therapy?

Before we take a closer look at Pod Therapy, let’s talk about insulin pump therapy.

An insulin pump is a device that delivers insulin in place of multiple daily injections.

A continuous amount of short acting insulin is delivered 24 hours a day through a cannula placed under the skin. This is known as basal insulin, but it’s sometimes called background insulin.

Additional insulin is delivered for meals and blood glucose corrections - these are known as bolus doses.

There is more than one type of insulin pump.

Pod Therapy, like pump therapy, offers the benefit of providing continuous insulin delivery, and does so through a tubeless Pod.

What Is Pod Therapy?

Pod Therapy was pioneered by Omnipod through the invention of patch pumps.

Omnipod DASH and Omnipod 5 are patch pumps, meaning no multiple daily injections and no tubes.

The wearable, waterproof* Pod includes a small, flexible cannula that inserts automatically with the push of a button. The Pod delivers personalized doses of insulin into your body based on the set and variable rates that you program into a handheld Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) or Controller. Altogether, it delivers up to 3 days (72 hours) of continuous insulin.

How does Pod Therapy Work?

Rather than multiple daily injections, or a traditional tubed insulin pump, Pod Therapy delivers insulin via a discreet, wearable Pod.

You can place the Pod almost anywhere you would inject insulin and wear it for up to 3 days (72 hours) of continuous insulin delivery.

The insulin delivery is wirelessly† programmed from a separate device (the Omnipod DASH PDM or Omnipod 5 Controller), a bit like a remote control.

Try the Pod Yourself and See How You Like It!

Order the Pod Experience Kit (PEK), which comes with a real-size, real-weight Demo Pod to give you an idea of what wearing a Pod feels like. The Demo Pod is a needle-free, non-functioning Pod and will not deliver insulin.

*The Pod has an IP28 rating for up to 7.6 metres (25 feet) for up to 60 minutes. Please consult sensor manufacturer user guide for sensor waterproof rating. The Omnipod 5 Controller and the Omnipod DASH PDM are not waterproof.

†At start up, the Pod and Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) must be adjacent and touching. The Pod and PDM should be within at least 1.5 metres to start the delivery of a bolus, change settings, or receive status updates. A specific distance is not required for basal delivery. The Pod will continue to deliver basal insulin even when the PDM is out of range.

‡The PEK includes a non-functioning, needle-free Pod which allows you to experience how it feels to wear a Pod. The demo Pod is for demonstrative purposes only and is not able to deliver insulin. This PEK is available only to people with type 1 diabetes who are on a current insulin treatment (e.g., multiple daily injections or insulin pump therapy). People with type 2 diabetes are not eligible to receive a PEK unless they reside in British Columbia. The PEK does not include a physical Omnipod 5 Controller or the Omnipod DASH PDM.
